Have you ever wondered how they measure jewelries for the body? - Vernier gauges are used to measure body jewelries.

These Vernier gauges are calipers. Sometimes, micrometers are also used for measurement of body jewelries, and gauge wheels are used to measure the diameter of the external part of body jewelry. Medical needles, which may include those that are used for piercing, have an inner diameter of 16G. Inner diameter is the usual measurement used for needles--- externally they may measure roughly 14G. Unlike the medical needles, the piercing needles basically are externally measured. There are different sizes or gauges that the industry making body jewelry uses. Most of these gauges have measures that are even numbers, ranging from 00G to 18G. However, this doesnt mean there are no gauges that are odd-measuring. Most of odd-numbered gauges are from jewelries that are not from North America. Differences in the diameter between two even-measuring gauges are an estimated 26%. Aside from gauges ranging between 18G and 00G, there are also larger ones, which are named after their sizes.

The jewelries length or the width is mainly dependent on the size of the earlobe piercing. Gauges which are smaller are indicated by numbers that are large. Steps are used to refer to gauges which are even. For example a 6 gauge is small compared to a 4 gauge. The 6 gauge, on one hand, is larger than an 8 gauge.

Measurement of body jewelry is between 00G and 20G. Large sizes have measurements which are made in fraction of an inch. Australian and European gauges usually use millimeters when measuring body jewelries.
